MIDNIGHT SNACK

Nighttime treats join the growing list of non-pharmaceutical sleep aids

As getting sufficient sleep continues to be an issue for young people, particularly Gen Zs, brands are coming to the rescue with consumer-friendly sleep aids. Rather than pharmaceutical or over-the-counter options, these snacks and drinks promise to help people fall asleep faster and rest peacefully through the night without the negative side effects associated with some pill-based products.

SNOOZE SNACK

A bedtime snack that consumers can actually feel good about, Snooze Snack is a sleep-inducing granola bar that consists of all-natural ingredients. The brand uses fruits, nuts, and oats to create the bulk of the bar, and the sleep-inducing elements come from doses of tryptophan and melatonin spread throughout. Snacking on half of a bar 30 minutes before bedtime helps to lull eaters into a peaceful slumber. The brand encourages natural sleep remedies over potentially addictive alternatives, offering data on their Kickstarter page that 4% of adults used sleeping pills or sedatives in the last 30 days.

SOM

Created after the CEO almost got into a car accident from falling asleep at the wheel, Som is an anti-energy drink that promotes a better night’s sleep to prevent daytime tiredness. The canned drink is vegan, non-carbonated, and non-habit forming with an option of original flavor or zero sugar added. Ingredients like melatonin, magnesium, and Vitamin B6 are added to help people feel sleepy faster; L-theanine, which is naturally found in green tea and promotes relaxation, was also added. The brand recommends consuming the drink 30 minutes before bed for optimal results.

SLEEP WELL

Sleep Well’s version of a sleep aid comes in the form of a natural milk enhanced with valerian root. Jersey cows provide all the milk, which contains 20% more protein and calcium than milk from other breeds and is said to taste better as well. Valerian is known for its sleep-aid properties and has been used to help people fall asleep for more than 2,000 years. For taste, Sleep Well has mixed in a little vanilla and honey, the perfect blend of fructose and glucose to help people fall and stay asleep.
