BOOZY BARS (OF ICE CREAM)
Boozy ice cream ideas abound
Alcohol is one of those magical categories that lends itself to combinations and hybrids—and now, it’s infiltrating ice cream, another category that has recently undergone tons of fun combinations and iterations. Whether the following icy treats mitigate the symptoms of a little too much boozing or contain booze themselves, this trend isn’t sobering up anytime soon.
NYC-based barlour—a hybrid bar and ice cream parlour—Tipsy Scoop opened its second metro location in Williamsburg, Brooklyn this month. While anyone can enter the barlour, only those of legal drinking age can order one of Tipsy Scoop’s famed boozy ice cream flights, since each scoop has the alcoholic equivalent of a light beer (around 5% ABV) and can give imbibers a buzz. The barlour itself has the feel of a vintage ice cream parlour—albeit one with a bouncer at the door to card those making a purchase—and offers interesting flavors such as cake batter vodka martini and tequila mexican “hot” chocolate.
South Korean convenience store chain Withme FS sells a grapefruit-flavored ice cream bar, called a Gyeondyo-bar, that is intended to combat hangovers in a sweeter way than say, taking shots of pickle juice. Appropriately, Gyeondyo-bar translates to “hang in there,” and boasts a secret ingredient: oriental raisin tree fruit juice, a traditional South Korean hangover cure that’s been used to ease the pain of next-day, alcohol-related maladies since the 1600s. The bar is currently available only in its country of origin.
Initially sold only in Canada, Häagen-Dazs’ alcohol-infused ice cream line, called the Spirits Collection, became available in the U.S. earlier this year. Dairy-based options in the line include Irish Cream Brownie, Rum Tres Leches, Bourbon Vanilla Bean Truffle, Stout Chocolate Pretzel Crunch, and Bourbon Praline Pecan pints, along with a non-dairy Amaretto Black Cherry Almond Toffee option. In addition to the pints, the line also includes Irish Cream cookie squares, an ice cream bar made of a chocolate cookie topped with Irish cream-infused ice cream and dipped in dark chocolate.
