SAVOR THE DAY
Sweet snacks get a savory twist
As the pendulum of consumer taste swings towards more savory treats, the following offerings from food and beverage brands demonstrate the continuation of this growing preference—especially among food-obsessed modern youth.
WASABI AND HOT CHICKEN WING OREOS
Last fall, Mondelēz, the parent company of Oreo, announced the launch of two new flavors for the brand’s iconic chocolate sandwich cookie: Wasabi and Hot Chicken Wing. While Oreo is known for regularly releasing experimental flavors, these two in particular made headlines for just how intensely savory they were. The Wasabi and Hot Chicken Wing Oreos aren’t available in the U.S., as Mondelēz only released them in China, but as desserts continue to trend towards savory over simply sweet, perhaps consumers across multiple markets will soon be eating similar mouth-searing cookies.
CHICKEN NUGGET ICE CREAM
XXI ICE, an Irish company that sells rolled ice cream, combined two junk food favorites when concocting their chicken nugget ice cream. The liquid base for the rolled ice cream contains chopped McDonald’s chicken nuggets, and the final dessert is also garnished with more full-sized McNuggets. While the chicken nugget ice cream drew polarizing reactions across social media, increasingly unique and savory twists—such as a particularly memorable smoked salmon ice cream sandwich or mayonnaise-based ice cream—have been infiltrating icy desserts for a while now.
CRISPY SWEET POTATO FRAPPUCCINOS
Last fall, Starbucks patrons in Japan were introduced to two crispy sweet potato flavored beverages: a blended frappuccino and a latte, which was available hot or iced. Both beverages included imo kempi (strips of thrice-fried and sugar-coated Japanese sweet potato chips, which are a common snack in the region) in some form, as the frappuccino had imo kempi mixed into the icy base as well as the accompanying whipped cream topping, while the latte boasted the imo kempi flavoring, as well as imo kempi-mixed whipped cream. This particular combination of a savory snack in a sweet format was well-received.
