Oat milk ice cream is trending

Oat milk is captivating health-conscious consumers looking for a viable (and delicious) nondairy alternative to add to their caffeinated beverage of choice. Now, brands are debuting ice cream made with this alternative milk, expanding nondairy dessert options for consumers who aren’t willing to sacrifice taste for health.

Swedish oat milk brand Oatly, which is widely credited with kickstarting the oat milk craze in the U.S., recently launched a line of seven oat milk-based ice creams. The pints cost $5.99 each and currently only retail in bodegas in NYC, but will expand to Wegman’s and Whole Foods stores later this year. The full lineup includes oat (for the hardcore oat milk fans), chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, coffee, mint chip, and chocolate chip flavors. Oatly’s innovative ice creams are similar to the brand’s other offerings in that they’re vegan, kosher, soy-, dairy-, and gluten-free, and contain no GMOs.

Earlier this year So Delicious Dairy Free debuted Oatmilk Frozen Desserts, a line of nondairy ice cream made with oat milk. The brand is credited with being first-to-market in the oat milk dessert category with this venture. The line contains three flavors: Peanut Butter & Raspberry (a blend of peanut butter and black raspberries in an oat milk base), Oatmeal Cookie (oatmeal cookie dough and cinnamon in an oat milk base), and Caramel Apple Crumble (apple, caramel swirl, brown sugar, and cinnamon in an oat milk base), all of which are vegan and gluten-free.

Boston-based cake shop Whipped Urban Dessert Lab is bringing “the world’s first oat milk ice cream shop” to Williamsburg, Brooklyn later this summer. The shop will introduce the brand’s new vegan, nut-free, soy-free, and gluten-free oat milk soft serve to NYC, joining the ranks of other trendy ice cream concepts that have also set up shop in this hip locale. The outpost will focus solely on oat milk soft serve, and feature the brand’s Signature Sweet Vanilla Crème flavor in addition to a rotating menu of other flavors. The shop will also offer a variety of natural sauces (such as Peanut Butter, Coffee, and Strawberry) and natural crumb coatings for the soft serve.
