Cold brew coffee gets an alcoholic twist

Coffee and alcohol brands are teaming up to create a hybrid beverage that offers double the buzz: hard cold brew. Interestingly, a few of these caffeinated brews actually offer the same ABV as hard seltzer ("the official beverage of summer 2019"), speaking to modern youth's demand for these types of craft, boozy, and ready-to-drink beverages.

Beloved urbanite coffee roaster La Colombe teamed up with MillerCoors to debut La Colombe’s Hard Cold Brew Coffee. Both brands encourage their consumers to have a little fun with this boozy hybrid via the drink’s campaign slogan, “Rally Like A Grow-Up.” Hard Cold Brew Coffee contains 4.2% ABV and 50mg of caffeine per nine-ounce can and can be purchased solo or in a four-pack. The beverage comes in two flavors: Black (made with roasted Colombian and Brazilian coffee beans, along with alcohol) and Vanilla (which contains cold brew coffee, authentic vanilla extract, and alcohol).

Pabst Blue Ribbon has been busy: between developing a PBR whiskey and releasing non-alcoholic version of its highly affordable beer, it’s no surprise that the cult beer brand recently introduced the brand’s Hard Coffee to their lineup. This milky spiked coffee is said to be reminiscent of a sweet Frappuccino—one that has a hint of alcoholic aftertaste. Made with Arabica and Robusta coffee beans, milk, and vanilla, this sweet sipper contains 5% ABV and only 30mg of caffeine per can (for comparison, a tall Starbucks iced coffee has 120mg of caffeine). PBR is currently testing Hard Coffee in five states but recently tweeted that it’s launching the beverage nationally in 2020.

Jägermeister dropped a bomb (pun intended) on consumers when it announced that the brand is debuting Jägermeister Cold Brew Coffee. This mix of Jäger, rich Arabica coffee, and cacao will contain an astonishing 33% ABV and each shot will have about 10% of the caffeine in a standard cup of coffee, giving imbibers a boozy boost. Fans of the brand, as well as those who are curious to taste this new concoction, can expect Jägermeister Cold Brew Coffee to be available in the U.S. and UK in 2020.
