Furniture and fitness equipment are essentially interchangeable

The pandemic has given rise to an intense demand for at-home fitness equipment to accompany virtual workouts, and the following offerings ingeniously meet consumers’ need for fitness solutions that either double as furniture or minimize storage space, checking multiple boxes for today’s interconnected, at-home, and still busy fitness fanatics.

Hauling yourself out of bed in the morning and getting to the gym has literally never been easier (even in 2020!) thanks to the folks at PIVOT Fitness. The new company’s only product is a bed that transforms into an optimal workout space in mere seconds. This nifty 2-in-1 PIVOT Bed flips up easily and locks into place for safety, revealing a small but effective home gym space that can accommodate many different workout accessories. The PIVOT Bed is currently on Kickstarter and should launch in 2021.

Brooklyn-based designer Hannah Fink seamlessly integrated this year’s renewed focus on nesting with fitness in her Masters of Industrial Design Thesis Project at the Pratt Institute. She created the Groove Exercise Bench, an aesthetically pleasing piece of workout equipment that doubles as a whimsical and modern piece of furniture. This three-section bench serves as a place to sit or rest your feet, but it also doubles as a piece of exercise equipment that’s similar to a pilates reformer, as it’s strung together with resistance bands and allows for body ambulation. The Groove offers users three levels of resistance across aerobic, strength, stretch, and balance exercises.

As at-home stationary bikes cycle their way into thousands of American homes this year, the Breakaway looks to provide at-home cyclists a spin workout that won’t break the bank or take up too much space. Fully funded on Indiegogo and retailing for just $399 for the initial prototype, the Breakaway is a lightweight exercise bike that can be folded into the size of a carry-on bag for easy storage. Not only is the bike compact, but it’s compatible with any workout app (smartphone mount included), has adjustable resistance, and fits any pedal type, so customers don’t have to shell out more for the proper footwear.
