Podcasts for Gen Z are flourishing

Interest in podcasts has grown in the past year as programs across this medium have diversified. Big brands and government agencies are increasingly producing podcasts, and there are even some competing with Hollywood today. While many of the hits are aimed at adults, lately, there’s a boom in podcasts specifically for Gen Z.

Members of Gen Z often experience screen overload, making podcasts an ideal alternative. Due to growing interest in the medium, NPR has launched “Wow in the World,” a podcast aimed at 5 to 12-year-olds that’s focused on science, technology, discovery, and inventions. The program has covered topics like animals, human origins, and space and often features interviews with real kids. Each episode begins with a series of questions and then leads into an explanation of the subject. The creators aim to tap into Gen Zs’ inquisitive and curious nature, and encourages them to continue the conversation with their peers and parents.

As reported in The Gen Z Effect, one in 10 Gen Zs currently uses podcasts for educational purposes, as do nearly two in 10 Trendsetters. Among such companies fueling this habit is Gen-Z Media, which makes podcasts for kids aged 8-12. The company, which is behind last year’s award-winning The Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel, has a slew of other scripted series, such as Six Minutes, an action-mystery, Pants Show, a game show, and The Weirdness, which highlights unexplained mysteries and conspiracies.

Aside from giving children a break from screen time, podcasts are celebrated for encouraging kids to use their imaginations to visualize what they’re hearing. To provide such benefits, podcasting company Panoply Media recently launched Pinna, a podcast and audiobook subscription service aimed at 4-to 12-year-olds. For $7.99/month, Zs can obtain access to ad-free content across genres, including mystery, fantasy, science, and sports, with the ability to filter offerings by age. Pinna offers original podcasts as well as previously released creations from other podcast creators.
