PLAYTIME IN A PACKAGE

Kid-friendly subscription boxes emphasize in-home entertainment

In line with how brands are increasingly debuting initiatives aimed at kids, and especially as school starts back up (albeit in a much different way this year), many parents are hoping to offer some extra fun for their children via curated subscription boxes. Dubbed “a parent’s best friend,” these boxes offer educational, engaging, and inspiring in-home activities that bring and keep the entertainment inside, which is especially convenient for families who might be sheltering and schooling from home during the pandemic.

KIWICO

KiwiCo’s monthly subscription boxes aim to inspire the next generation of innovators. The brand’s “seriously fun and enriching science and art projects” encourage youngsters to harness their creativity. With a variety of boxes for makers as young as zero and as old as 104, KiwiCo’s STEAM projects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) are for “every age and interest.” Whether making handmade soap or building a lamp, each project comes with detailed instructions for some hands-on and educational fun.

JUST LIKE ME! BOOK BOX

The Just Like Me! Book Box directly tackles the lack of representation of characters of color in children’s literature while also promoting self-discovery, diversity, and family-based playtime. Each monthly box has a different theme and comes with 2-3 curated books featuring characters of color from award-winning authors, and the books advance as the child ages. Diversity in children’s books can be hard to find, and Natachi Onwuamaegbu wrote about the harm the lack of representation in the media causes, saying, “When all we study is white and all we see is white, all we create is white,” underscoring just how crucial offerings like the Just Like Me! Book Box are.

NIKE ADVENTURE CLUB

Kids are in for a treat with this stylish and interactive footwear subscription service. The Nike Adventure Club sends kids adventure kits containing brand new Nike or Converse sneakers that parents or kids choose in advance. The kits also come with interactive activity books and outdoor adventure guides that inspire youngsters to “get off the screen and ready to play.” Interested parents can subscribe to this box to receive four or 12 pairs per year based on different pricing plans.
