Apparel brands launch size-inclusive activewear lines
The number of teens buying “plus size” apparel has nearly doubled since 2012, yet the market remains woefully underserved from a style standpoint—but that may soon change. Bridal brands are awakening to the fact that women of all shapes want to look chic at the altar, and new activewear lines are launching in acknowledgement that the pursuit of health knows no size.
Perennial fast-fashion hub Forever 21 recently added a full activewear range to its plus size offerings in U.S. stores and online. The collection is available in XL to 3XL and is price-friendly as well as size-friendly—no item costs over $30, and the line includes playful pieces like a marble-print sports bra and a take on the omnipresent mesh-panel legging. To celebrate the launch, F21 selected in-demand model Ashley Graham, who has graced the pages of Vogue and Sports Illustrated, as the face of the campaign.
NOLA BY ADDITION ELLE
2016 has proven to be an active year for Ashley Graham, whose NOLA by Addition Elle plus size athleisure collection launched on additionelle.com, lordandtaylor.com, and in select Lord & Taylor stores this February. Designed to be worn 24/7, the line blends functional fabrics with a fashion-forward aesthetic into four different styles of leggings, yoga pants, sports bras, tanks, tees, and running jackets, making it the latest ADDITION ELLE collection to obsess over. All pieces range from size X to 4X except for the sports bras, which come in 1X to 3X.
Combining feminism with nerdom, a new activewear collection from roller derby retailer Frogmouth Clothing is an ode to cult comic book series, Bitch Planet. Set in a dystopian future in which non-compliant women are sent to prison, the series is described by The Guardian as "one part Black Mirror, one part Orange Is The New Black" and focuses on women of color and trans women. The officially licensed line is available in 36 sizes up to 6XL Long, and all items are made of a special lightweight, durable fabric that Frogmouth originally designed for roller derby players.
