CASSANDRA SESSIONS: GENERATIONS SHAPED BY AESTHETICS

IN CONVERSATION WITH BETHANY BRAUN-SILVA

Today’s Daily is our final recap from last month’s Cassandra Sessions: "That’s So Aesthetic – the Gen Z Vibe and Its Reverberation in the Market.

Bethany Braun-Silva, parenting, entertainment, and lifestyle expert and host of "The Breakdown With Bethany" podcast, joined us on stage to discuss the impact of Gen Z on other generations’ aesthetics, shedding light on how parenthood can influence one's aesthetics and examining the distinctive aesthetics that are being crafted by Alphas. Below are three key takeaways from Bethany’s comments.

GEN Z GIVES OTHER GENS “PERMISSION TO POSE”

Gen Z’s influence transcends generational boundaries and has helped inspire all ages to adopt a more innovative and open-minded approach to their own aesthetics. Bethany commented that Gen Z are significantly more likely to identify themselves as 'creative,' a notable distinction from older generations. This creative nature propels them to push boundaries, challenge traditional norms, and embrace diversity, meaning they're disrupting the notion that one's aesthetic should entirely define one's identity. Bethany noted that a result of this is that we all have Gen Zs to thank for giving permission for more self-expression and creativity to our personal aesthetics.

MOM MODE IS AN AESTHETIC

In Cassandra’s Parents On Board report from earlier this year, we explored the concept of "Keeping the 'me' in Millennials." We found that Millennial parents are pushing back against the pressure to showcase the "perfect" image of parenthood, which can be overwhelming. Bethany echoed this perspective, highlighting that even after becoming parents, they’re all about maintaining their unique style and authenticity through fashion, home decor, and online presence. And Millennials Alpha kids have a say in this too. Bethany noted that as children develop their preferences, moms find it fun to adapt their style to align with their kids' interests. Shared fandoms (which we’ll explore in our November Cassandra Report) like celebrating T-Swift and picking concert outfits and friendship bracelets can become a platform for aesthetic development, where both parent and child enjoy a certain “vibe” together.

GEN ALPHA SIGNAL THEIR “VIBE” DIGITALLY

When my son got his first phone this summer, he immediately began customizing it to match his aesthetic. He added pictures from '80s movies like Rocky and Back to the Future as his background images. Making it feel like his phone was his top priority." Bethany shared this personal anecdote to highlight how aesthetics are weaving their way down into younger generations. When you think about it, most of us have the same phone, but what's fascinating about Gen Z and their younger cohort, Alphas, is how they're taking something universal and adding their own unique spin. Whether through their meticulously curated Instagram feeds or by creating custom home screens that bring their aesthetic to the forefront., they’re putting a lot of energy into getting their digital vibes just right.
