VIRAL NEWS: NON-COMPETE CLAUSES, TIKTOK'S TICKING CLOCK, AND AIRLINE SHAKEUPS!

A peek into the topics buzzing at Cassandra

Happy Fri-YAY! This week started out fairly quiet and has since seen a barrage of items hit our radar. While we can’t cover it all (though we’d like to!), we have a few that topped our list. Today we are diving into a few surprises from our current administration, including a look at non-compete clauses, an update to the TikTok saga, and a clampdown on airlines - the future is about to see a shakeup!

TIME TO RE-UP THE CONTRACT

On Tuesday, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) voted 3-2 to ban non-compete agreements, which prohibited millions of workers from seeking new opportunities with competitors or starting their own venture. Voices on both sides are giving rise to key issues, while those in favor expect to see more job movement, higher salaries, and a growing economy. It will be fascinating to watch how these changes impact Gen Z as they continue to be a growing cohort of the working population, soon to overtake the number of Baby Boomers in the workplace!

TIKTOK’S LAST DANCE?

Mid-week President Biden signed into law a ban on the popular app TikTok, stating it’s parent company ByteDance is now on the clock to find a new buyer in the next 9 months, or exit the U.S. entirely. The bill is supported by many across the upper echelons of government to help limit the sharing of information about U.S. citizens with China. Content creators on the other hand are up in arms, worried about the impact on their small businesses and livelihood. According to Cassandra’s research, 7 in 10 Global Gen Zs agree that using TikTok is one of their favorite things to do - so the question becomes, what will fill the void if TikTok does dance off into the night?

FROM TRAVEL DELAYS TO TRAVEL YAYS

The Department of Transportation dropped some heavy luggage on airlines Wednesday, stating they must provide cash refunds to customers if their flight is canceled or seriously delayed. This change could drop an additional $500 Million into travel hungry consumers pockets each year. As Cassandra has reported, travel is a top passion point among Gen Z, as well as Millennial parents who are passing this love down to their Alpha kids. We plan to keep an eye on this oversized change, as it will have lasting effects on travelers for generations to come.
