Tradition Meets Trend

The 150th Kentucky Derby's Fusion of Style, Sport, and New Generations

Springtime marks the return of the Kentucky Derby, the iconic thoroughbred racing event filled with history and tradition. From the mint juleps to the vibrant floral dresses and over the top hats, the Derby is as much of a celebration of style as it is of equine excellence. Whether you’re a long-term racing enthusiast or a newcomer, the Kentucky Derby promises excitement. So, place your bets, and let’s look at what’s going on at the Derby this year:

ATTRACTING GEN Z WITH THE UNWELL NETWORK

Churchill Downs Racetrack, home of the Kentucky Derby, has partnered with Gen Z focused media network, UNWELL to merge tradition with modern entertainment. Alex Cooper, creator, host and executive producer of the successful Call Her Daddy podcast, founded The Unwell Network and will bring a fresh perspective to the event. Cooper will also be joined by fellow UNWELL content creator, Alix Earle. The duo will discuss their derby experiences, including their fashion choices and how they prepared for the event. “Since the Kentucky Derby is one of the only American sporting events that captures majority female viewership and attendance, it is incredibly fitting to partner with the most trailblazing women in modern media today to celebrate the historic 150th Kentucky Derby,” said Casey Ramage, Vice President of Marketing and Partnerships.

WOODFORD RESERVE’S 150TH DERBY TRIBUTE

In celebration of the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby, Woodford Reserve is releasing a commemorative bottle. The special edition bottle features the painting, “Adorned in Roses”, which depicts a racehorse on a background of colored roses. The artwork is extra special coming from Kentucky native artist, Wylie Caudill. “Wylie’s artwork embodies the spirit of Woodford Reserve, the liveliness of Churchill Downs during race day, and the heart of Kentucky. We’re thrilled to have a Kentuckian’s artwork on our bottle during this monumental year,” said Woodford Reserve Master Distiller Elizabeth McCall.

DERBY STYLE

2024 marks the first publication of the Kentucky Derby Style Guide, providing outfit inspiration for attendees. Zanna Roberts Rassi was chosen as a Guest Style Editor for the guide and shares her trend predictions for the event. Rassi predicts that “glacial blue” will be the color of the season while traditional floral patterns will see an upgrade with 3D, embellishments and motifs. Preppy outfits are also predicted to make an appearance and Rassi expects to see polos, sports blazers and plaid patterns. As always, headwear will take center stage at the event and Rassi suggests building an outfit around it.
