Youth Driving Change and Innovation

As the urgency of climate action grows, young people continue to inspire and drive transformation. Today, we are looking at three of the biggest areas that this generational cohort is advocating for change.

TECHNOLOGY FOR GOOD

Young innovators are harnessing technology to develop solutions for climate change, such as using data to track emissions, developing new renewable energy technologies, and creating platforms to connect people who are working on climate solutions. Powerledger develops software that “allows consumers and producers to track, trace and trade every kilowatt of energy”. The platform enables peer-to-peer energy trading and allows individuals to buy and sell surplus renewable energy directly. Climeworks is pioneering direct air capture technology, a process that involves pulling carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and storing it underground. Ecosia is a search engine with a mission, using its advertising revenue to plant trees around the world. These companies exemplify the fusion of technology and environmental stewardship.

SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION

In an era where environmental consciousness continues to gain momentum, younger generations are leading the charge toward more sustainable transportation choices like biking, walking, public transportation, and carpooling. They are also showing interest in electric vehicles and advocating for better infrastructure for alternative transportation. There are a number of apps that can support those looking for a greener commute options, such as Citymapper, which provides real-time transit information helping users plan their public transportation journey. Lime and Bird provide e-scooter and e-bike options for those looking for a fun and eco-friendly way to get around.

CLIMATE ACTIVISM

Young activists are leading the charge in the fight against climate change. Their passion and determination have sparked a global movement, demanding urgent action from governments, businesses and individuals. Organizations such as Fridays for Future and Extinction Rebellion are encouraging young people to take to the streets, raise their voices, and demand change.
